BKFC 85 Betting Preview: Gee Perez vs. Chancey Wilson

    Published on:

The BKFC 85 undercard has a Flyweight matchup that looks visually jarring. We have Gee “The Cutman” Perez standing across from Chancey “Superfly” Wilson.

If you just look at the odds you see Perez as a massive favorite (-425). But if you look at the tape you see two very different approaches to bare knuckle boxing. This is a battle of the “athletic but flawed” against the “compact technician.”

    The Case for Gee Perez

Gee Perez is a physical problem at 125 lbs. Standing 5’8″, he towers over most of the division. He is explosive and gets over his shots well, using that reach to touch you from distance.

But his defense is frustrating to watch. He uses this “modified Philly shell” that I honestly don’t think works for bare knuckle. He relies entirely on his quickness and often waits way too long within punch range with his hands down. He drops his hands until he is ready to fire offense which leaves him wide open.

His footwork is also suspect—he crosses his feet constantly. A technician with good timing could easily time him coming in or catch him when he is resetting. But so far his athleticism and size have bailed him out.

    The Case for Chancey Wilson

Chancey Wilson is the complete opposite. He is a compact southpaw giving up about six inches of height here. But he looks like the more traditional, polished boxer.

Wilson is “defense first.” He keeps his movement consistent and always keeps the opponent guessing. He doesn’t just stand there; he forces you to think about what he is doing. From what I’ve seen his hands are actually faster than Perez’s. He picks his shots well and doesn’t overcommit.

The problem is simply size. Wilson is a natural 125-pounder (or smaller) while Perez looks like he could fight two weight classes up. Wilson has to work twice as hard to get inside that reach.

    The Verdict

This is a classic “Better Boxer vs. Bigger Man” scenario. I actually think Chancey Wilson is the more skilled technician. He doesn’t make the fundamental mistakes Perez does like crossing his feet or dropping his hands in the pocket.

However bare knuckle rewards strength and size heavily. Perez is very likely to overwhelm him just by being the bigger bully in the ring.

That said, the price is ridiculous. Perez opening as a -425 favorite implies he is unbeatable, which isn’t true given his defensive holes.

Official Pick: Perez likely wins on size, but at these odds? I’m staying away from the favorite. Sprinkle a small amount on Chancey Wilson for fun.
